Meet our Experts - Janet Horsfield

Janet Horsfield is part of our network of experts, read on to hear more about her work.

Janet Horsfield has a longstanding interest in enhancing the sustainability of farming practices across the UK. With 29 years of experience as a practising farm veterinarian, she has developed strong communication skills and a deep understanding of how to engage effectively with farmers and stakeholders on sustainability issues affecting cattle, sheep, and even some goat herds.

Before becoming a director in a mixed veterinary practice, Janet served as a lecturer in ruminant health, production, and welfare at the University of Liverpool. Her academic role included delivering large group lectures, facilitating small group teaching, and conducting practical workshops—supported by formal training in educational delivery.

Janet’s professional ethos is rooted in a commitment to environmental stewardship, animal health and welfare, and the well-being of students, clients, and staff. Her practice currently holds a Green Award under the Investors in Environment scheme, reflecting its dedication to sustainable operations.

She is passionate about public engagement and education, regularly writing articles and delivering talks to farmers, schools, and the wider public. Her presentations promote sustainability themes such as animal welfare, biodiversity, responsible antimicrobial use, and food provenance.

Janet chairs a Flock Health Club comprising approximately 20 sheep farmers, aimed at sharing knowledge and experiences to improve flock health and sustainability. Her team also run ‘Ignite Agri-forum’ and ‘Chewing the Cud’ discussion groups, which explore innovative approaches to farming, diversification, and sustainable practice.

At home, Janet applies these principles to her own small flock of upland, rotationally grazed, pasture-fed sheep—supporting biodiversity and flood management initiatives. Her completion of the course A Veterinary Approach to Sustainable Food and Farming has deepened her understanding of the broader challenges facing agriculture and further ignited her enthusiasm to contribute meaningfully to a more sustainable future.
