Richard left Australia in 1993 to work for New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), initially in operational roles in the South Island which involved management experience in the livestock processing industry. He continued to develop his strong interest in Animal Welfare, gaining experience in both legislative aspects and their practical application. His career continued to develop at MPI and, more recently, has involved responsibility for developing animal welfare legislation, and the implementation of animal welfare standards within New Zealand, predominantly for livestock species. This work involves working closely with colleagues from across MPI, and with livestock industry organisations.
Richard became a board member of the New Zealand Veterinary Association in 2002, serving two terms as President 2009-2011 and was awarded an Honorary degree from Massey University Veterinary School in 2013 for services to the veterinary profession. Most recently he has been serving as chair of the New Zealand Animal Welfare Network Aotearoa (AWNA) on behalf of NZVA. The network brings together over 35 organisations that have a focus on animal welfare be that – companion animals, livestock, animals in sport, research, teaching and testing, wild or feral animals.
Richard lives in Christchurch, New Zealand and brings a wide range of experience to VetSalus, particularly in the animal welfare legislative arena.
