Kevin Crews

Kevin Crews is a Massey University 1983 veterinary graduate and Managing Director for CTSL, a New Zealand registered company that specialises in disease and pest management strategic and operational design, One Health systems, operational epidemiology, quality assurance, monitoring and audit, and training. He has worked in the areas of preventative medicine, industry disease control and quality assurance for nearly 40 years, in both the public and private sectors.

Kevin would summarise his subject matter expertise as operational epidemiology in complex ecosystems, including disease surveillance system design (domestic and wild animal), proof-of-freedom analytics, disease diagnostics, geographic information systems (GIS), and genomic sequencing.

Kevin currently works as a Senior Disease Management Veterinarian for OSPRI New Zealand Limited, the company which manages New Zealand’s bovine tuberculosis (TB) eradication strategy, Mycoplasma bovis eradication strategy, and the National Animal Identification and Traceability (NAIT) programme.

Kevin has delivered papers on NZ’s successful bovine TB strategy at multiple international conferences throughout the past 25 years, as well as being author/co-author of several published papers on bovine TB.

In more recent times Kevin has also worked privately as a disease surveillance SME on international One Health development projects assessing pandemic preparedness early-warning surveillance and endemic zoonotic disease surveillance in one of the world’s emerging pandemic-potential hotspots in Central Asia.

Kevin is a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (MANZCVS) by examination in epidemiology and is a foundation member of the College’s Veterinary Public Health (VPH) Chapter. Kevin has extensive veterinary governance experience including past-Vice Presidency of the New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA), past-Presidency of NZVA’s Food Safety, Animal Welfare and Biosecurity (FAB) Special Interest Branch, and is currently President of the Veterinary Public Health (VPH) Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists.

For the past two years Kevin co-chaired the One Heath Aotearoa (OHA) Symposium Organising Committee. OHA is an alliance that brings together experts in academic research and operational science from the fields of animal, human and environmental health and the annual OHA Symposium has now become one of the signature One Health events in this part of the world.

Kevin lives in Christchurch, New Zealand and is married to Lynne, who works in finance for a global critical communication products company. They have three adult children who have all left home to pursue careers entirely different from their own. Sharing with their children a strong belief and desire to leave the world in a better place than the one that we all inherited. Kevin looks forward to working with VetSalus and its partners to achieve this same outcome.
